Equestrian Trails on Florida's Central East Coast

St. Sebastian River Preserve State Park

Horseback riding is popular at this park. With more than 60 miles of trails and equestrian camping, horses and their riders are comfortable here.

Saint Lucie County

Fort Drum Marsh Conservation Area

Fort Drum Wildlife Management Area (WMA) consists of nearly 21,000 acres in southwestern Indian River County. This area is a mosaic of wetland and upland communities, including dry prairie, pine flatwoods, hardwood swamp, and floodplain marsh. Hunting, fishing, wildlife viewing, horseback riding, hiking, biking, paddling, and camping are permitted on the area.

Savannas Preserve State Park

Located in Port St. Lucie, along the Intercostal Waterway. There are over 15 miles of multi-use trails available for park visitors and group tours. The trails are shared by hikers, bicyclists and horseback riders. The nature trails wind throughout the Savannas marsh system, so depending on the season and weather, the trails may be wet. Equestrian parking is available at the north end of Scenic Park Drive in Port St. Lucie in front of Sandhill Crane Park's main entrance.

Allapattah Flats

Fifteen miles west of Stuart on Florida's east coast, Allapattah Flats Wildlife Management Area protects a large area of marsh and slash pine flatwoods. Horseback riders enjoy the 5.5-mile horse trail that runs parallel to Fox Brown Road and winds south through brush and oak.

Martin County Trails

Horse trails in county parks. There are several county parks in Martin County that offer horse trails, but the website makes it difficult to find them.

Jonathan Dickenson State Park

Located at 16450 S.E. Federal Highway .Visitors can enjoy paved and off-road biking, equestrian horse trails, and hiking trails within Jonathan Dickenson State Park.

DuPuis Reserve

An equestrian center at Gate 3 has horse barns, paddocks, campsites, restrooms with showers, a dump station, and a trailhead marking the beginning of 40 miles of equestrian trails.

Bayard Conservation Area

Bayard WMA is comprised of 9,702 acres in southeastern Clay County, south of Green Cove Springs extending nearly seven miles along the western bank of the St. Johns River. Recreational activities include hunting, bank fishing, wildlife viewing, hiking, horseback riding, bicycling, camping, and picnicking. All horseback riders must have proof of current negative Coggins Test results for their horses when on state lands.

Black Creek Ravines Conservation Area

One of the features not to be missed at Black Creek Ravines is the spectacular overlook of Black Creek. The bluff stands almost 30 feet above the creek, an elevation rarely seen in Florida and provides a breath-taking view of the creek. Hiking, horseback riding, fishing, primitive camping at designated sites, wildlife viewing and nature study.

Buck Lake Conservation Area

Buck Lake WMA consists of 9,291 acres adjacent to the St. Johns River in southeastern Volusia County and northwestern Brevard County. The property includes marshes dotted with cabbage palm hammocks, a marsh lake (Buck Lake), pine flatwoods and scrub. Recreational opportunities include hunting, fishing, wildlife viewing, hiking, bicycling (on roads) and horseback riding.

Herky Huffman/Bull Creek Wildlife Management Area

Herky Huffman/Bull Creek is located in Osceola County, 3.5 miles east of Holopaw and 28 miles west of Melbourne. Scenic creeks, pine flatwoods and floodplain swamp attract wildlife and a wide range of recreationists. Enjoy hunting, fishing and wildlife viewing and take in good views of well-managed habitats while hiking, bicycling and horseback riding.

Caravelle Ranch Wildlife Management Area

Bordered by the St. Johns and Oklawaha rivers, 11 miles south of Palatka. Enjoy hiking, bicycling and horseback riding on more than 20 miles of multi-use trails and unpaved roads that pass through many of the area’s habitats. Pine uplands and wetlands associated with the rivers are actively managed for wildlife and recreation.

Clark Bay Conservation Area

This property is adjacent to Tiger Bay State Forest (near International Speedway / U.S. 92) and the Plum Creek Volusia/Pineland Conservation Easement, south of DeLand. One of the special highlights of this property is the 5 miles of semi-shaded marked trail providing viewing opportunities for various wildlife species such as white-tailed deer and Osceola turkey. Recreational activities Hiking, wildlife viewing, equestrian activity and seasonal hunting.
