Florida horse rescueHorse Rescue

Florida horse rescue organizations serve a vital need to accept, treat, and shelter horses in distress.

Many of these Florida rescue organizations have horses available for adoption to qualified horse owners. Contact one of the rescue groups listed here to find out about volunteering your services or adopting a horse.

Therapeutic Horseback Riding

It has been found that being around horses has a therapeutic effect on many individuals who suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD may be caused by many factors where a person has had a traumatic experience such as military veterans returning from combat conditions.

There are several horse organizations in Florida that specialize in therapeutic equestrian experiences and they are listed here.

Horse Services Volunteers

Many Floridians find joy and satisfaction in volunteering at horse rescue and therapeutic riding organizations. For many, it is a way to be around horses and  at the same time enjoy the deep feelings that come from contributing to the well being of others.

All horse service organization depend on contributions and volunteers to be able to function. Consider lending some of your time to these important endeavors.

Horseback Riding Clubs

One of the great joys of horse ownership is the companionship of other equestrians. Florida supports hundreds of horse clubs and associations that are based on horse breed, riding discipline, horse shows, or just plain fun horseback riding.

SASS Outlaw Cowboy Mounted Shooting
What is SASS Mounted Shooting? Think of a cowboy or cowgirl atop a 1,200 pound horse, six guns a blazing while galloping through a patterned course of fire, and you may get the mental image of a cowboy action mounted shooter. SASS mounted shooting is a direct spin-off of Cowboy Action Shooting.
Mounted shooting is a sport that combines elements of old-time Wild West Show exhibition, along with the elements of barrel racing, pole bending, reining, and many other equestrian skills; all done while using two .45 caliber single action revolvers, loaded with 5 rounds each of black powder blanks to shoot ten balloon targets set in a special random pattern or Old West type scenario called a 'stage'. Typically, a competitor crosses the timing beam and engages the first pattern of five targets. After a shooter fires the fifth shot, he or she returns the empty revolver to a holster and proceeds to the next set of five targets. Mounted shooters are timed through the stage determining raw time plus any penalties incurred; for instance, 5 seconds added to raw time for knocked over barrel, dropped gun, missed target. The contestant with the fastest accumulated time wins.
